Quincy City Council's finance committee recommends $140 million for road and other repairs
QUINCY — City Council's finance committee has recommended appropriating more than $140 million for roadway and drinking water system improvements in the city over the next several years.
The recommendations came in a Monday meeting and will have to be approved by the City Council.
The city's public works department is asking for $100 million to improve about 40 miles of roadways over the next five to seven years. About $65 million would be used on new neighborhood street improvements and about $20 million would be used for main roadways. The department is also asking for $11 million to finish an expanded 2018 street improvement plan and $4 million in sidewalk improvements.
The public works department is also asking for $40 million to improve about 23 miles of drinking water mains over the next five years.
Al Grazioso, the city's commissioner for public works, told council members that improvements in infrastructure now saves money in the long run. He said it's cheaper than when infrastructure decays beyond repair and needs to be replaced.
